How to Play Pickleball | Arangio

So, you've decided to dip your toes into the world of pickleball, a sport that sounds like it involves throwing cucumbers over a net, but thankfully, it's not that bizarre.

In fact, pickleball is a fun blend of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, with a hint of "I have no idea what I'm doing" thrown in for good measure. But fear not, because you're about to embark on a journey that promises equal parts fun, confusion, and an inexplicable urge to shout "pickle" whenever you score a point.

Picture this: a court, a net, some paddles, and a wiffle ball. If you're envisioning a cookout gone horribly wrong, you're close, but not quite there. Pickleball is actually a charmingly addictive game that has taken the world by storm, and by storm, I mean "people of all ages are flailing around with paddles, hoping not to miss the ball, and having fun in the process."

But before you can hit that ball over the net, you need to know the basics. Like, why is it even called pickleball? Is there a cucumber shortage involved? And what's the deal with that "kitchen" where you're not allowed to cook anything?

Don't worry, my confused friend, I've got your back. In this guide, we'll take you from absolute pickleball novice to "Hey, I didn't totally embarrass myself on the court today!" expert. We'll cover the equipment you'll need, the rules you'll have to sort-of remember, and the weird pickleball-specific lingo you'll pick up along the way (pun intended).

So grab your paddles, put on your game face, and get ready to embrace the wonderful world of pickleball.

Because once you start, you won't be able to stop, and you'll find yourself muttering "pickle" under your breath during family dinners, much to the confusion of your relatives.

Introduction to Pickleball: A Beginner's Guide to Getting Started

Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It's a fantastic way to stay active, socialize, and have fun while getting a great workout. If you're new to pickleball and looking to dive into this exciting game, our comprehensive guide will provide you with all the essential information you need to get started.

1. Equipment for Pickleball

Before you step onto the pickleball court, it's important to have the right equipment. The key piece of gear you'll need is a pickleball paddle. These paddles come in various shapes and sizes, catering to different playing styles. When choosing a paddle, consider factors like grip size, weight, and materials. If you're uncertain about which paddle suits you best, many facilities offer demo paddles that you can try before making a purchase. This way, you can find the perfect paddle that complements your playing style.

Choosing the Right Ball (Outdoor Pickleball): Pickleball balls are designed differently based on the type of court surface you're playing on. If you're playing on a hard court, similar to a tennis court, you'll use an outdoor ball. These balls have slightly smaller holes to reduce wind resistance and ensure better gameplay outdoors. On the other hand, if you're playing on a wood or plastic gym-style surface, you'll use an indoor ball with larger holes. This ball type provides better bounce and is more suited for these surfaces.

The Importance of Proper Footwear: Having the right shoes is crucial for any sport, and pickleball is no exception. When playing pickleball, it's recommended to wear court shoes or pickleball-specific shoes. These shoes have a hard rubber sole that prevents your foot from rolling during quick lateral movements. Avoid using running shoes or soft-soled shoes, as they can cause instability and even lead to injury on the court's abrasive surface.

2. Ready Position, Grip, and Grip Pressure

Mastering your ready position, grip, and grip pressure is essential for effective pickleball gameplay. Your ready position should have your paddle's top tip pointing upward, indicating a neutral and offensive stance. The grip pressure scale ranges from 1 to 10, with softer grips (1-5) suitable for dink shots and drop shots, while firmer grips (6-10) add power to your hard-hit shots. The basic paddle grip involves holding the paddle as you would during a handshake, ensuring a comfortable and controlled hold.

3. Basic Rules of Pickleball

Understanding the basic rules of pickleball is vital for smooth gameplay. One essential rule involves the "no volley zone" or kitchen. Players cannot hit the ball out of the air while standing inside the kitchen. However, it's allowed to step into the kitchen to hit a ball after it bounces. Remember, a ball that's hit out of the air while you're in the kitchen or if your momentum carries you into the kitchen is considered a fault.

Serving Techniques and Rules: Pickleball serves come in different styles, such as ground stroke and front-of-body serves. The ground stroke serve resembles a return of serve and involves starting with a diagonal stance and hitting the ball from below your waist. The front-of-body serve requires standing with your toes pointing at the target, then swinging the paddle from below your waist towards the ball. Remember, the serving team follows the "two bounce rule," where the served ball must bounce once on the receiving side, and the return must also bounce once on the serving side before players can volley.

Scorekeeping in Pickleball: Scorekeeping in pickleball involves stating three numbers: your team's score, the opponent's score, and the server number. The server number indicates whether you're the first or second server on your team. However, keep in mind that the server number changes based on the right-side player at the time of the side out.

Advantage of the Second Server: At the beginning of the game, the team serving first has a slight advantage. This team has the opportunity to score points before the opponent serves. Therefore, when calling the score at the start of the game, refer to yourself as the second server (e.g., "zero zero two"). This adjustment ensures fairness during the initial rounds.

Summary

Whether you're playing for fun or seeking a competitive edge, pickleball offers an engaging and enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels. To reduce injury, follow a proven pickleball-specific strength-and-conditioning plan. Get your gear ready, practice those serves, and prepare for hours of exhilarating gameplay on the pickleball court.
