Be a Part of Something Bigger Than Yourself | Arangio

In a world that often bombards you with messages of self-centeredness and individualism, it can be hard to wrap your head around the idea that life is about something beyond just you.

But once you embrace this truth, it can transform the way you experience the world.

At its core, this concept is about recognizing that we are all interconnected beings, part of a larger web of life that extends far beyond just you. Whether you realize it or not, your actions ripple out and impact the world around you, shaping the lives of others and contributing to the greater good. It's like karma, but real.

How to Be a Part of Something Bigger Than Yourself

Think about it for a moment. The food you eat, the products you buy, the words you speak – each of these choices has consequences that reach far beyond your immediate sphere of influence. By understanding and embracing your interconnectedness, you can start to make choices that not only benefit you but also uplift and support the well-being of others and the planet as a whole.

But beyond just recognizing your interconnectedness, embracing the idea of being a part of something bigger than yourself can also bring a profound sense of purpose and meaning to your life. When you shift your focus away from your own individual challenges, wants, and needs and instead orient yourself towards serving a greater cause, you tap into a deeper source of fulfillment that transcends fleeting moments of pleasure or gratification.

For me, this greater cause is fighting the obesity epidemic using health-and-fitness content, science, and habit change via telehealth (coaching, tracking, and community). I'm hopeful that my work will impact future generations. For others, it might be social justice – working to dismantle systems of oppression and inequality and create a more just and equitable society for all. And for others still, it might be spiritual or religious in nature – finding meaning and purpose in serving a higher power or the greater good of humanity.

Whatever form it takes for you personally, the key is to find something that resonates deeply with your values and passions and commit yourself wholeheartedly to it. When you do, you’ll find that life takes on a whole new dimension of richness and depth, as you become an active participant in the ongoing story of human civilization and the evolution of consciousness itself.

Now, I want to address a common misconception that often arises when you talk about being a part of something bigger than yourself: that it somehow diminishes the importance of individuality or self-care. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I would argue that embracing your interconnectedness and committing yourself to a greater cause actually enhances your ability to live your best life.

When you prioritize the well-being of the collective over your own narrow self-interests, you create a culture of collaboration and cooperation that benefits everyone involved. And when you take care of your own physical, mental, and emotional health – ensuring that you have the energy and resilience to contribute meaningfully to the causes you care about – you become a more effective agent of positive change.

So, how can you start to shift your perspective from “me,me,me” to “we” and embrace the idea of being a part of something bigger than yourself? Here are a few practical tips to get you started:

1. Cultivate gratitude

Take time each day to reflect on the many blessings in your life and express gratitude for them. My daily prayer is to thank God for the massive prosperity in faith, family, finances, and health. When you appreciate the interconnectedness of all things, you realize that you are part of a vast web of abundance that extends far beyond your individual self.

2. Practice empathy

Make an effort to understand and empathize with the experiences and perspectives of others, especially those who may be different from you. By recognizing shared humanity, you can cultivate compassion and connection with those around you. And nobody likes a show-off anyway.

3. Get involved

Lead by example – because actions speak louder than Instagram posts on your smartphoneFind a cause or community that aligns with your values and interests and start making a positive difference. Whether it’s volunteering your time, donating money, or advocating for change, every action you take has the power to create ripple effects of goodness in the world.

4. Take care of yourself

Self-care isn’t selfish – it’s essential. Prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being so that you have the energy and resilience to show up fully for yourself and others. You'll slow aging too. Remember that you can't pour from an empty cup.

5. Stay humble

Recognize that none of us has all the answers, and that true wisdom comes from listening to and learning from others. Stay humble in your journey of growth and self-discovery, and remain open to new ideas and perspectives that challenge your own.

As you embark on this journey of embracing your interconnectedness and being a part of something bigger than yourself, remember that you are not alone. Countless others around the world are on this path with you, each doing their part to contribute to the greater good. Together, we have the power to create a brighter, more beautiful world for ourselves and future generations.

So go forth and embrace the profound truth that life isn’t about you. It’s about being a part of something bigger than yourself. In doing so, you’ll discover a sense of purpose, connection, and joy that will sustain you for a lifetime.

Summary:

Find purpose beyond yourself. For me, it's battling obesity through health content. For you, it could be anything. Gratitude, empathy, involvement, self-care – these are our tools. Together, let's make the world brighter. Life isn't about you; it's about something bigger. Go out and find it.
